It’s amazing how far a team can fall in a year. Especially when the car is an evolution of the previous year’s. Then again, when the previous year’s car was a cheater, so... not as surprising. Apparently all that oil burning was worth a half a second.
Also pretty amazing that this year’s Merc is a full second faster than last year’s pole sitter.

It’s more than just the engine for Ferrari. Every other car on the grid including the Ferrari powered Haas and Alfa Romeo are faster than the 2019 versions with the exception of the Ferrari. The Ferrari engine got pegged back but they also built a turd of a race car.

didn’t they think it was the fuel meter shenanigans?

True, I think a lot of it is that this design was heavily influenced on having the “cheater” motor.
Once they removed that powerful motor, the chassis is simply too “draggy”. Then they tried to remove drag to compensate, but the aero is so complicated in F1 these days they will essentially need a whole new design to fix it, and they are stuck for the rest of the year with a compromised chassis.
They are also probably hoping to get some help from the FIA and F1 teams to allow them to update their now “locked-in” engine spec. After the debacle of the FIA secret resolution with Ferrari regarding their cheating, all the teams were upset with Ferrari.
But now, everyone feels sorry for them, even Mercedes! I wonder if they are especially sucking right now to make sure they are allowed that engine update exception?

It’s pretty amazing, I watched the post qulay analysis and the gap on the straight after Eau Rouge is quite a big difference. I love how the drivers keep saying they are looking into the reasons... um we know!

Exactly, the whole design depended on that and now it’s a brick. Everything is was designed to generate is now not working or working against them.

Please, no. I’m so sick of that photo.

Form the YT comments:
I can no longer use ‘Ferrari engine’ as my password as it’s considered ‘too weak’
Brutal.

Ha, I just noticed they were doing that.

If I’m not mistaken they’re stuck with it next year too right? Because they’re putting off the redesign for a year they’re supposed to run the same car next year with very minimal modifications right? I can’t imagine how much another year of this would suck.

How fucked is it that Williams gains over 4 seconds in race pace in one year, yet still 1/2 second slower than Ferrari

“Aerodynamics are for those who can’t build engines.” - some guy
It’s all very sad to see.

Except Aero is more important than engines in F1, it’s the bedrock of F1 development and ha been than way for a long time now.
But when your aero is based on a specific engine output and you no longer have that, they simply can’t do the fix overnight.

I think they are allowed to do quite a bit of aero changes, enough to fix their fortunes if they get it right, but right now they are confused to what the car is doing. I suspect they will be a lot better next year.

Its an Enzo Ferrari quote.

Yes Ferrari is held back by designing a car for a higher output engine but there's more to it than that. Haas and Alfa Romeo also designed their cars for the same engine Ferrari designed theirs for and they both managed to build cars that are faster than what they had last year, unlike Ferrari.

Oh, absolutely. I just think the very old quote is ironic given that the reason Ferrari is in their current predicament is that they couldn’t build a good non-cheaty engine.

I think the reason is Ferrari didn’t give them the full cheat engines, at least not to their level.
Though they could have also in combination screwed up the rest of the car as well.
I’m sure the answer is a mixtures of the two.
